The people of Kogi State have been called upon to come out in their large number to vote during the November 11, 2023 governorship election.
This call was made by the Onu of Dekina ,Alhaji Usman Obaje in his palace during a visit by Shadanpama Grassroots Initiative, one of the NGOs engaged by INEC to carry the message of peaceful conduct of election to the nook and cranny of Kogi State.
The objective is to ensure a violent – free governorship election coming up on Saturday November 11th 2023.
Obaje while talking to the group led by Mr. Femi Akinbiyi, CEO/founder of Shadanpama Grassroots Initiative advised his subjects not to engage in any form of violence and election malpractices.
In his words : “election is not kill your neighbours or burn their houses; just go out and cast your vote for any political party or candidate of your choice. ”
He , however, promised to invite the leaders of various groups in the town, including the political parties, youth, men, women and religious bodies and impress it on them, the need to maintain peace in Dekina Local Government before, during and after the election.
The traditional ruler said he will also urge them to come out en masse to vote without any fair of any intimidation or harassment as adequate security arrangement will be put in place.
He promised to join hands with other traditional rulers in his domain to ensure they pass this message of peace to their subjects.
Obaje , finally prayed for peace in the land during the election.
Shadanpama grassroots Initiative later moved to Dekina Central market where flyers translated into local Igala language along English version were distributed.
The group later moved round some major streets and adjoining villages to continue the sensitization.
At Ayingba Central market parents were told to appeal to their children to avoid any form of electoral violence during and after the election.
Barrister Jacob Ayanda, a member of the group explained that electoral offences come with various penalties.
According to him, such offences include intimidation of voters, holding more than one Voter’s card,collecting ballot papers on behalf of others, attempt by unregistered or ineligible individuals to vote, possession of offensive weapons, snatching and destruction of election materials among others.
