Five of the 12 inmates that escaped from Koton Karfe Medium Security Correctional Centre in Kogi State have been recaptured.
The Service Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar confirmed this in a statement in Abuja Monday evening.
The incident happened in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2025.
He said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining nine inmates and bring them to justice.
According to him, some inmates tampered with the padlocks in one section of the facility, leading to the escape of 12 prisoners.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and efforts are underway to recapture the escapees, he said.
The NCoS urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that may aid the recapture of those still at large.
Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
Reaffirming its commitment to the safety and security of custodial centres, the NCoS assured Nigerians that measures are being reinforced to strengthen security across all facilities.
Umar said the Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, swiftly mobilised security agencies, including the SSA to the Governor of Kogi State, to restore order and launch a manhunt for the escapees.
The Acting Controller General has also ordered a full investigation into the incident and a security audit of all correctional facilities nationwide to prevent future breaches.
