FUOYE’s Growth Trajectory Guided By Our Strategic Initiatives – Prof. Fasina

The Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, says the exponential growth of the institution established 14 years ago, is due to the strategic initiatives and transformational programmes put in place by the school to address its immediate priorities while advancing long-term aspirations.

Fasina, stated this during a press conference held at the Main Campus to kick start activities for FUOYE’s 9th Convocation Ceremony.

The press conference was held on Monday, February 17, 2025.

Fasina is an accomplished professor of soil science and academician of high standing with great intellectual prowess.

The Vice Chancellor said :
“FUOYE’s growth trajectory is guided by our strategic initiatives, which are designed to address both immediate and long-term goals.

“One of the key initiatives is the Green Revolution Initiative, launched in 2023, which emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices and aligns with Nigeria’s economic needs.

“To date, we’ve cultivated 15 hectares of oil palm, 10 hectares of cassava, and 5 hectares of pineapple, and we are exploring further agricultural ventures.

“This initiative is not just about enhancing FUOYE’s financial sustainability, but also contributing to national food security and economic development.” P

He disclosed that FUOYE is equally exploring “The development of a Renewable Independent Power Station to help secure reliable, sustainable energy for the university.

“This partnership with private energy companies is an essential step toward ensuring the long-term sustainability of our operations, especially as we continue to expand.”

The Vice Chancellor executed over 150 projects in the last four years of his headship of FUOYE, added : “An institution’s physical infrastructure is essential for fostering an environment of learning, creativity, and collaboration.

“FUOYE has seen an impressive expansion of its facilities during my tenure.

“We have successfully constructed over 30 new lecture halls, state-of-the-art laboratories, and office spaces across both the Oye and Ikole campuses.

“Significant accomplishments include the completion of the Fasina Conference Centre, a versatile space designed to host academic conferences and professional events, made possible through the generous contributions of friends of Fasina.

“Additionally, we have successfully completed major structures such as the Faculty of Law Building, Faculty of Education Building, and several new lecture theatres—all integral to our continuous efforts to foster a dynamic and conducive learning environment.

“Furthermore, the ongoing construction of hostels, sports facilities, and a new Senate Building, alongside major roadworks and landscaping, underscores our commitment to developing a visually appealing, functional, and sustainable campus.

“Notably, our hostels are equipped with solar power, reinforcing our dedication to renewable energy and environmental sustainability.”

Speaking on his commitment to staff welfare, the FUOYE helmsman said : “One of the cornerstones of this administration has been a deep commitment to the welfare of our staff.

“We understand that a university is only as strong as the people who make it function—from faculty to administrative staff.

“Recognizing their vital role, we have implemented a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing their well-being.

“We are pleased to announce that staff promotions have been paired with improved benefits and support systems, including health and housing programs.

“Additionally, we introduced rebates for staff on part-time programs to ensure that our staff have access to continuous education and professional growth opportunities.

“In terms of housing, the Staff Quarters Partnership with Federal Mortgage Homes has been a vital project, with discussions ongoing for the development of 200 housing units that will provide affordable accommodation for our staff.

“This initiative reflects our unwavering belief that a satisfied and supported staff is key to an institution’s success.

“Further, recognizing the need for a work-life balance, we have provided end-of-year packages for all staff as a token of appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

“We also recently approved a 20% rebate on sundry fees for the biological children of our staff, making education more affordable for the families of those who contribute so much to FUOYE’s success.”

The professor of pedology likewise spoke on FUOYE’s exploits in the area of sports.

“In 2024, FUOYE made its mark in athletics by securing 3rd place overall at the South West Athletics Competition held in Ibadan.

“Our football team also earned recognition, clinching Silver Medals at the Ekiti State Football League.

“Our athletes shone brightly at the 2024 concluded Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Games, where FUOYE dominated the Male 100m race, winning Gold, and secured a Silver in the Female 200m race.

“In Taekwondo, FUOYE athletes triumphed in the -73-weight category, earning a Gold medal.

“Additionally, FUOYE earned Silver in the Judo competition.

“Our football team achieved exceptional success, ranking 1st in Ekiti State, 2nd in Nigeria, and 3rd in Africa,” he said.

Fasina further disclosed that at the 9th Convocation ceremony whose grand finale is on February 22, 2025.

“A total of 8,444 students will receive their degrees, including those from undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs.

“This marks the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance, and I am proud of each of our graduands who will join the ranks of FUOYE alumni and go on to make a mark in their various fields.”

Giving the performance breakdown of the graduating students at the undergraduate level, Prof. Fasina revealed that 177 got first class, 3,466 second class upper, 3,715 got second class lower, 831 got third class, and only two had pass.

At the postgraduate level, 38 will graduate with Ph.D, Msc/MBA 211 and PGD 4, he said.

At the grand finale of the 9th convocation,, five eminent Nigerians will be awarded Honorary Doctorate Degrees.

Announcing the honorary doctorate degree awardees, Fasina said : “This convocation is particularly special, not only because of the thousands of graduands who will be honored but also because we will be conferring Honorary Degrees (Honoris Causa) on five exceptional individuals who have made lasting contributions to their fields.

“These individuals represent the values we hold dear at FUOYE: integrity, excellence, and service to humanity.

“They are: Senator Kanu Godwin Agabi, CON, SAN – Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the Federation; Chief Christopher Adebayo Ojo, SAN, FCI, CON – Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of the Federation; Mr. Segun Alebiosu, Managing Director, First Bank of Nigeria; Dr. Allen Onyema – Chairman, Air peace Airline and Mrs. Layal Oluwaseyi Tinubu.”

Applauding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT) for his show of support towards FUOYE and introduction of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), he stated : “I express my profound gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his steadfast support of FUOYE, as well as for the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and TETFUND interventions.

“I also sincerely appreciate Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji of Ekiti State for his ongoing partnership.

“Furthermore, my heartfelt thanks go to the Senate, the University Management, staff,students, and all stakeholders whose dedication and hard work have been instrumental in advancing FUOYE’s mission.

“The success of FUOYE is a collective achievement, and I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished together.”
