A violent clash between soldiers and followers of masqueraders has led to the death of two persons in Adavi Local Government area of Kogi State.
The violence clash occurred on Sunday when followers of a group of masqueraders allegedly attacked two soldiers dressed in civilian dress.
Report said the soldiers left for their barrack after the attack and later returned with reinforcements, leading to a tense confrontation that quickly spiraled into violence.
The Echane Masquerade Festival is an annual event in Ogaminana, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State.
According to residents, the soldiers on arrival allegedly shot into the air,causing panic and confusion as people fled for safety.
Some followers of the masqueraders were said to have responded almost immediately by throwing stones at the security personnel.
In the ensuing clash, two persons, including a POS operator identified as Omeiza, who was killed inside his kiosk by stray bullet.
The second victim who was shot in front of his house, later died as a result of gunshot injuries he sustained.
Attempts to obtain an official reaction from the Kogi State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages sent to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Oyiza Saliu, were not answered as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, in a swift reaction, Kogi State Government announced immediate suspension of the Echane Masquerade Festival throughout Ebiraland.
The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, announced the government decision in a statement on Monday.
He said intelligence reports had raised concerns that activities linked to the festival could threaten public safety and lead to a breakdown of law and order in parts of Kogi Central.
While acknowledging the cultural importance of the festival and its role in preserving Ebira heritage, the government emphasized that safeguarding lives and property remains its top priority.
“Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo consequently directed the immediate suspension of all festival activities and instructed security agencies to enforce compliance across the affected communities.
“The government warned that individuals or groups found organising, participating in, or promoting activities related to the suspended festival would be sanctioned in accordance with the law,” Fanwo said.
Government also called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and residents to cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace and preventing further unrest.
