President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist flood victims in some parts of Maiduguri, Borno State, pledging his commitment to mobilize federal resources to support the state .
He gave the directive on Tuesday in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga.
While relevant authorities are still assessing the damage wrought by the flood, the President also called for the immediate evacuation of people from the affected areas.
President Tinubu further assured the state’s Governor, Babagana Zulum that the Federal Government is ready to collaborate to address the immediate humanitarian needs of the affected people.
Expressing concern about the heavy flooding, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the state, especially to the families that have lost their means of livelihood due to the disaster triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam.
Intense flooding has affected Maiduguri the Borno State capital almost cutting off the major parts of the area from rest of the state.
Deaths of livestock, and shut down of businesses, hospitals and schools have also been reported as floods completely took over town.
The floods caused by heavy rainfall and disaster triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam is said to be the worst in the state in recent time.
