The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Umar Iliya Damagum as its acting National Chairman.
Damagum was until his appointment the Deputy National Chairman ,North , of the party.
Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP confirmed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said the appointment of Damagum as the acting National Chairman of PDP takes with effect from today, Tuesday, March 28, 2023.
According Ologunagba , the National Working Committee (NWC) ratified the appointment of Damagum at an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, March 28, 2023.
He said the NWC”s action was in acknowledgement of the Order of the Benue State High Court, dated March 27, 2023 which asked Dr Iyorchia Ayu to stop parading himself as the national Chairman of the party.
“After a careful consideration of the Court Order and in line with Section 45 (2) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017), the NWC resolved that the Deputy National Chairman (North) His Excellency, Amb. Umar Ililya Damagum assumes the National Chairmanship of our Party in acting capacity with effect from today, Tuesday, March 28, 2023.
“The NWC charges all leaders, critical stakeholders, teeming members and supporters of our great Party to remain calm and united at this critical time,” Ologunagba said.(vitalnewsngr.com)
