The Nigerian Army has flagged off the renovation of St. Stephen’s A Primary School, Itaasin, Modakeke, Osun State in what has been described as a landmark intervention for the community’s educational development.
The project, which is to commence following a directive made during a visit by a military team led by Navy Capt. Saliu Aliero on Tuesday, September 16, is part of the Army’s broader community development and social responsibility initiatives aimed at uplifting public infrastructure and strengthening ties with host communities
Built in 1929, the school’s iconic storey building has stood for nearly a century, serving generations of children in Modakeke.
Over the years, however, the classrooms and facilities have deteriorated, creating an urgent need for restoration.
According to the Army’s outline, the renovation will cover structural repairs to the ageing classrooms, upgrades of learning spaces, provision of modern educational facilities, and a general facelift of the school environment.
These measures are intended to create a more conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning for both pupils and teachers.
Speaking at the event, the Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Dr. Joseph Olubiyi Toriola, expressed deep appreciation to the Nigerian Army, describing the gesture as “a timely and rare intervention that will not only restore the dignity of this historic school but also boost the quality of education for our children.”
The school’s Headteacher, who is preparing for retirement later this year, also shared her gratitude.
With visible emotion, she thanked both Kabiyesi and the visiting Army team for their support, pledging full cooperation from the staff and pupils during the renovation exercise.
“This school has produced countless sons and daughters of Modakeke who are making us proud.
“To see it given a new lease of life before I leave office is a blessing I will never forget,” she remarked.
In their address, the Army reiterated its commitment to supporting civil institutions and promoting military-civilian relations through impactful projects.
Capt. Aliero stressed that the initiative goes beyond infrastructure, symbolizing the Army’s determination to contribute to the nation’s social development and to strengthen trust with the communities it serves.
As renovation works begin, the people of Modakeke look forward to the transformation of St. Stephen’s A Primary School, a project that not only repairs walls and roofs but also rekindles hope for the next generation of learners.
