Lionel Messi Retires From International Football
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Lionel Andrés Messi, Argentina captain and Inter Miami forward, has announced his retirement from international football on Monday, August 31, 2026, bringing an extraordinary 21-year senior career with Argentina to an emotional close after the 39-year-old played in the 2026 World Cup final against Spain in New Jersey.

Messi’s decision ends one of the most remarkable international careers in modern football, a journey that began in 2005 and eventually brought Argentina the 2022 World Cup, two Copa América titles and a generation-defining run of success.

The announcement comes more than a month after Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final on July 19.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute as Spain claimed their second men’s World Cup title.

Messi had initially left his international future unresolved after the final.

His first public reaction focused on the pain of losing the trophy rather than announcing his departure, with contemporary reports noting that he had made no decision about retirement at the time.

That uncertainty has now ended.

In his emotional statement, Messi said the decision had been painful but that he understood the time had come.

“After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the National Team,” Messi said.

The Argentina captain also reflected on the commitment he had shown throughout his international career, stressing that his dedication had extended well beyond the period in which Argentina finally began collecting major trophies.

Messi said he had “always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey”, adding that his greatest motivation had been to give Argentines moments of joy and pride.

The decision carries an especially personal weight following the death of Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, earlier in August at the age of 68.

Jorge Messi played a central role in his son’s career, acting as his representative and helping guide the young footballer from Rosario towards global stardom.

Messi later acknowledged the emotional impact of his father’s death and said the experience had strengthened his conviction about the direction of his career.

His retirement statement noted that the words had originally been written on July 21, two days after the World Cup final, but that events involving his father had left him even more certain of the decision.

The timing also gives a different meaning to Messi’s tearful appearance after the World Cup final.

At the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, Messi was visibly devastated after Spain ended Argentina’s defence of the world title.

The defeat denied Argentina a second consecutive World Cup crown and denied Messi the chance to finish his sixth World Cup appearance with another trophy.

The final nevertheless added another extraordinary record to his career.

FIFA confirmed that Messi extended his record for World Cup appearances to 34 matches.

At 39 years and 25 days, Messi also became the second-oldest player to appear in a World Cup final and the oldest outfield player ever to play in the showpiece match.

Messi finished the 2026 tournament with 21 World Cup goals, leaving him behind Kylian Mbappé in the competition’s all-time scoring standings.

Yet Messi’s international story was never defined solely by statistics.

For years, the Argentina captain carried the weight of expectation after a difficult beginning with the senior national team.

Argentina lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany and suffered consecutive Copa América final defeats in 2015 and 2016.

The frustration became so severe that Messi announced his international retirement after the 2016 Copa América final defeat by Chile.

He reversed that decision two months later, beginning a second chapter that would eventually transform his relationship with Argentina supporters.

That transformation became complete in the years that followed.

Messi led Argentina to the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The World Cup triumph finally delivered the major international prize that had eluded him for so long and helped settle one of the defining debates surrounding his career.

The 2026 campaign offered another memorable chapter, although it ended in heartbreak.

Argentina arrived at the final having remained unbeaten in 13 consecutive World Cup matches, but Spain’s control of the contest ultimately prevented the defending champions from retaining the trophy.

There was also a poignant generational image after the final.

Spain’s 19-year-old Lamine Yamal, one of the defining young talents of the new era, embraced Messi after the match.

The moment captured the changing landscape of international football, with one generation’s greatest figure sharing the pitch with a player expected to shape the next.

Messi’s retirement does not, however, mean an immediate end to his playing career.

The 39-year-old remains an Inter Miami player and continues to perform at an extraordinary level.

On August 30, Messi scored four goals and supplied an assist in Inter Miami’s emphatic 7-1 victory over CF Montréal, taking his MLS league tally for the season to 18 goals.

That performance underlines the distinction between Messi’s international retirement and his future in club football.

His decision concerns Argentina rather than an immediate withdrawal from the professional game.

Messi also used his farewell message to thank the people who accompanied him through the difficult and triumphant stages of his career.

He thanked his family, coaches, teammates and officials before turning his attention to the supporters who followed him through more than two decades.

“I leave with the peace of mind and pride of having given you, alongside my teammates, moments we once only dreamed of,” Messi said.

The decision closes a powerful chapter for Argentina.

Messi leaves the national team not as the player who once struggled to satisfy an impatient football nation, but as the captain who eventually delivered the game’s biggest prizes and helped create one of the country’s most successful eras.

His final words were characteristically devoted to Argentina rather than himself.

“I love you,” Messi wrote. “Thank you, God, for making me Argentine. Let’s go, Argentina!”

For a player whose international career began amid immense expectation, survived painful defeats and ultimately reached the summit of world football, the farewell is both difficult and fitting.

The shirt that Messi wore for 21 years will now belong to a new generation.

The memories, records and extraordinary legacy left behind will remain firmly attached to Argentina’s number 10.
