Asaba – At last over 46 athletes from Kogi State are now in Asaba, Delta State to participate in this year’s edition of National Youth Games.
The State Director of Sports, Obakachi Onipeon Saturday confirmed the arrival of the athletes and their officials in Asaba for the games.
He said the athletes have been successfully screened at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, venue of the games.
Onipe said there was no major challenge confronting the athletes and their officials presently, saying that adequate support was received from the state government to ensure full participation in the games.
He assured sport lovers in the state of overwhelming victory by the state contingent at the end of the competition.
Onipe expressed appreciation to Governor Yahaya Bello and the state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Idris Musa for encouraging the participation of the athletes from the state at the games by releasing the needed funds to that effect.
The Director, however, did not give reason why the state contingent arrived the venue two days after the official start of the game.
Vital News had on Thursday, September 21, 2023 reported that the athletes were stranded in Lokoja due to non release of funds by the state government.
Onipe also failed to explain why the number of athletes earlier scheduled to represent the state at the games was reduced from 71 to 46.
