The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered the immediate transfer of 1,332 officers out of the Delta State Command.
The ordered followed widespread outrage over the alleged extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
The directive comes in the wake of public anger surrounding the incident, which reportedly involved an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman.
The move is being viewed as a sweeping institutional response aimed at addressing concerns over police conduct and restoring public confidence.
According to an internal police wireless message dated May 3, 2026, and referenced CH:5360/FS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.42/182, the order was issued from the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The signal directed the immediate redeployment of affected personnel to various commands nationwide.
The communication was circulated to all Deputy Inspectors-Generals overseeing key departments, including Force Intelligence, Operations, Training and Development, Logistics and Supply, and the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
It was also copied to Assistant Inspectors-General in charge of specialised units such as the Police Mobile Force, Border Patrol, and Special Protection Unit, as well as all zonal commands.
Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory were formally notified, alongside commandants of major police training institutions, including the Police Academy Kano and the Police Staff College Jos.
Specialised formations such as the Airwing, Railway Command, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, Intelligence Response Team, and Interpol desk were equally directed to comply with the redeployment order.
The signal, titled “Posting/Transfer of SPOs,” instructed that all affected officers proceed to their new postings with immediate effect.
Receiving commands were further directed to report compliance to the Office of the Force Secretary and the Inspector-General’s Secretariat on or before May 22, 2026.
The order was endorsed by Assistant Inspector-General of Police Bode Akinbamilowo, acting as Force Secretary on behalf of the Inspector-General.
The mass transfer is widely interpreted as a direct response to the killing of Ogidi, which has intensified scrutiny of police operations in Delta State and renewed calls for accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
