Abuja – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it secured 2,220 convictions across the country in 2021.
The commission in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, January 6 said the figure indicated that it recorded 98.49 per cent success in prosecution.
The commission’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, signed the statement titled, ‘EFCC secures 2,220 convictions in 2021″
He said the convictions were the highest ever recorded by the anti-graft agency since inception.
“Before 2021, the highest record of conviction by the commission was secured in 2019 with 1,280 convictions.
“The 2,220 record of 2021 is a 127.5 per cent improvement over the 2019.
“Interestingly too, the 2,220 record represents a 98.49 per cent success rate in prosecution as the commission lost only 34 cases during this period,” the statement said.
A further breakdown of the total convictions command by command
showed that Lagos recorded the highest number of convictions of 481 while Ibadan command followed with 324 convictions.
The Port Harcourt zonal command recorded 230 convictions, the third highest in the country.
The statement quoted the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, as commending the personnel for their industry and dedication in spite of the challenges of criminal prosecution in court.
“The EFCC will continue to motivate all categories of staff members for greater efficiency through capacity development and other incentives,” Bawa was further quoted as saying.(vitalnews)
