Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has approved an increase in minimum wage for the state civil servants from N70,000 to N90,000.
Ikeuwa Omebe, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation disclosed this on Thursday after the State’s Executive Council meeting.
Omebe while speaking to journalists, said the governor’s decision to increase the minimum wage stems from his desire to improve the welfare of workers across the state.
He said the implementation of the new minimum wage takes immediate effect.
Omebe said the newly approved N90,000 covers all categories of workers in Ebonyi.
“We want to state categorically that this is not a political statement, as this government does not toy with workers’ welfare,” he said.
He also disclosed that the state government has also offset the pension and gratuities of state retirees from its creation in 1996 to date.
According to Omebe, the verification process for retirees in the Local Government Areas had commenced, and when completed, the payment will be made.
Omebe then assured the people of the state of the governor’s commitment to their welfare.
“The government is anchored on the biblical people’s charter of needs mantra which is leading the people according to their needs.
“The EXCO exhaustively deliberated on the issue and approved its implementation for the affected permanent secretaries and directors,” the commissioner stated.
