A Kwara State High Court sitting in Offa has sentenced five persons to death for their involvement in a dastardly robbery incident in Offa in April 2018.
The suspects are to die by hanging according to the court’s ruling on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
This was pronounced by the court presided over by Justice Haleema Salman after they were found guilty of the three-count of : illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and conspiracy to commit culpable homicide punishable by death.
The court made the pronouncement after the prosecution had successfully proved its case against the defendants.
The convicts are Ayoade Akinnibosun, Azeez Salahudeen, Niyi Ogundiran, Ibikunle Ogunleye, and Adeola Abraham.
The convicts had participated in a robbery incident in Offa in April 2018, during which they robbed at least five commercial banks in the ancient town.
Many people, including nine policemen, were killed in the incident which involved the stealing of an undisclosed sum of money from the banks.
The court had allowed the convicts to take the plea of allocutus (Plea of mercy) but eventually sentenced all of them to death by hanging.
Justice Salman said : “The five of you shall be hanged on your neck until you are dead to serve as a lesson to others.”
