Lokoja – The Kogi State Executive Council has approved a Memo, containing the bills for the establishment of Kogi State University, Kabba and other matters connected to its establishment .

The council gave the approval during its weekly meeting held in Lokoja on Monday, June 19, 2023.

Consequently, the council directed the state Attorney- General to transmit the bill to the State House of Assembly for consideration and quick passage into law.

The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology,  Hon. Wemi Jones, told newsmen after the meeting that a University Law is one of the pre-requisite for the National University Commission (NUC) to recognise and approve the establishment of any new university in Nigeria.

He said that the state government was working towards ensuring that the proposed university is given approval by the NUC in few weeks time.

The government said the state government is
planning to raise N15 billion start up funds for the university.

Jones said the recently inaugurated implementation committee under the Chairmanship of Prof. Olu Obafemi has been working in concert with other stakeholders to speed up the process.

He, however, said that the committee after several considerations, recommended that
the new university takes off from the present site of the Kogi State College of Education Technical , Kabba.

He said the College of Education will be relocated to a new site in Mopa-Muro Local Government Area of the state.
