South Africa Commences Deportation Of 586 Nigerians Over Irregular Immigration, First Batch Of 268 Arrive Nigeria
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

No fewer than 83 Nigerians stranded in South Africa are expected to return home on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

He said the evacuation was made possible through the intervention of public-spirited private individuals who sponsored the returnees’ air tickets

This latest evacuation is coming months after the Federal Government repatriated nearly 1,490 Nigerians from the country amid rising anti-foreigner sentiments and Afrophobic attacks.

The latest batch of returnees is scheduled to arrive at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, at about 8:45pm on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, aboard South African Airways.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the evacuees are expected to depart Oliver Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, at 3:35pm local time.

The development comes after the conclusion of the Federal Government’s voluntary repatriation programme, through which almost 1,490 Nigerian citizens were brought back from South Africa.

The government had undertaken the voluntary repatriation exercise against the backdrop of renewed concerns over attacks, discrimination and anti-foreigner sentiments targeting African migrants, including Nigerians, in South Africa.

While the latest evacuation was not presented as a continuation of the concluded government-funded programme, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said the intervention demonstrated the importance of private-public collaboration in responding to emergencies involving Nigerians abroad.

It expressed gratitude to the individuals and philanthropists who funded the tickets, describing their intervention as an example of the “whole of society approach” being promoted by the Federal Government.

The ministry also appealed to organised private-sector operators, corporate organisations, state governments and other Nigerians at home and abroad to support similar humanitarian interventions.

According to the government, such collective action would strengthen Nigeria’s ability to respond promptly to consular emergencies and protect citizens facing difficult circumstances outside the country.

The latest return of Nigerians also brings renewed attention to the longstanding tensions surrounding the treatment of African migrants in parts of South Africa.

Nigerians living and doing business in South Africa have, over the years, faced incidents ranging from xenophobic attacks and intimidation to discrimination and violence. Periodic anti-foreigner campaigns have heightened concerns among African nationals, particularly whenever migrants are blamed for unemployment, crime or pressure on public services.

Nigeria and South Africa have maintained diplomatic and economic relations despite periodic tensions arising from attacks on foreign nationals and other bilateral issues.

The Federal Government said it would continue engaging the South African authorities to address what it described as the root causes of Afrophobia and prevent violence and discrimination against Nigerians.

It further stressed that acts of violence against Nigerian citizens must be condemned and that perpetrators should be held accountable.

The government’s position is part of its broader Citizen Diplomacy agenda, under which it says the welfare, safety and dignity of Nigerians abroad remain a priority.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nigerians in the diaspora should not be regarded as a burden but as important contributors to national development.

It added that the government remained committed to protecting Nigerians abroad while deepening strategic partnerships with host countries, including South Africa.

The sponsorship of the latest evacuation by private citizens has also highlighted the role of non-governmental actors in supporting Nigerians caught in difficult situations abroad.

While the Federal Government has the primary responsibility for consular assistance to its citizens, emergencies involving large numbers of Nigerians can place significant demands on diplomatic missions and public resources.

The ministry’s appeal for broader support therefore signals an effort to expand the pool of resources available for emergency repatriation and other forms of consular assistance.

For the 83 Nigerians scheduled to arrive in Lagos on Wednesday, the privately funded evacuation provides another route home following the government’s earlier voluntary repatriation exercise.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry commended the sponsors for what it described as an act of patriotism and selflessness, saying their intervention had helped alleviate the plight of the affected Nigerians.

The latest development comes at a time when the government is seeking stronger cooperation with host countries to ensure that Nigerians living abroad are protected from violence and discrimination while contributing positively to the economies and communities where they reside.

The ministry reiterated that Nigeria would continue to engage South Africa diplomatically to tackle Afrophobia, prevent attacks and ensure accountability whenever Nigerians become victims of violence.

The 83 returnees are expected to touch down in Lagos at approximately 8:45pm tomorrow, bringing further attention to the continuing challenges faced by Nigerians living abroad and the growing importance of coordinated government, private-sector and community responses to consular emergencies.
