The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a popular Ibadan masquerader, “Asoleke”, over the alleged k!lling of a 24-year-old man, Sefiu Kehinde, during a procession in the Labiran area of Ibadan.
Police confirmed the arrest of the Masquerader in a statement issued on Monday, July 6, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade.
Ayanlade said the deceased was allegedly attacked by the masquerade and some of its followers during the procession on Sunday, July 5, 2026 as part of the annual Egungun Festival in the ancient city.
According to the statement, the incident was reported at the Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters, after which a team of operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Mapo Division immediately mobilised to the scene and rushed the victim to a hospital for treatment.
However, he was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.
Ayanlade said detectives processed and documented the crime scene, while the deceased’s family later obtained permission to bury the body in accordance with Islamic rites.
The command confirmed that the Asoleke masquerade has been arrested in connection with the incident, while four of his alleged accomplices remain at large.
