The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has raised an alarm over the dangers posed by counterfeit batteries and misleading labeling within Nigeria’s battery and solar power sector.
At a sensitization workshop held at SON’s office in Ilorin, Kwara State, SON emphasized the risks of substandard batteries on consumer safety and urged Nigerians to prioritize quality when purchasing energy solutions.
Themed “Driving the Efficiency and Effectiveness of the Battery/Solar Power Sector to 100%,” the workshop aimed to foster safer practices and reliable energy solutions across the country.
Engr. Ibukun Alasan, a facilitator at the workshop, cautioned that using low-quality batteries could result in malfunctions and even endanger lives.
“Labels that mislead users lead to improper maintenance and product damage,” Alasan said.
She further advised Nigerians to look for SON’s quality seal before purchasing batteries.
She added that “many customers now rely on trusted brands because they deliver genuine value.”
Also speaking at the event, Habibullahi Abdullahi stressed the role of quality solar accessories in advancing Nigeria’s renewable energy goals.
“As stakeholders—manufacturers, regulators, and consumers—we must urgently work together to set stringent quality standards and regulatory frameworks,” he stated, calling for greater collaboration among industry players.
Representing the SON Director-General, Kwara State Coordinator Ayeni Feyisayo highlighted the negative impact of counterfeit products on productivity and general wellbeing.
“If people cannot reliably power their equipment, it impacts their mental clarity, efficiency, and overall welfare,” he explained, urging manufacturers to commit to responsible practices.
The SON reiterated its commitment to enforcing standards and warned that distributors of counterfeit products would face stringent penalties.
