21 Victims Of Anambra Stampede Buried Amid Tears

Twenty -one persons who died during a stampeded at a Christmas rice distribution event in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, were on Friday buried amid tears.

The victims were mostly women and children.

They were buried after an inter-denominational service, held at St. Mary’s Field in Okija.

The burial event was jointly organized by the Obijackson Foundation and the royal palace of the Okija community.

The ceremony was attended by families of the victims, survivors, community members, and notable figures.

Rev. Donald Chukwudolue, who delivered a sermon anchored on Revelation 21:1-8, prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the bereaved families.

“We ask God to wipe away every tear and console the families of the deceased.

“We pray such an accident will not occur in Okija again. Okija mourns, Anambra mourns, and Nigeria mourns,” he said.

Rev. Chukwudolue expressed the collective grief of the community, emphasizing the need for unity in the face of tragedy.

“Nobody would hear such tragic news and not feel sober.

“Only the Lord can console those who lost their loved ones, and we pray the Lord will continue to comfort them,” he added.

Also speaking, Ernest Azudialu Obiejesi, founder of the Obijackson Foundation, expressed deep sorrow over the incident.

He reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to the well-being of the Okija community and pledged to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.

“Today, we gather here with heavy hearts to honour the memory of those we lost in the tragedy.

As the founder of the Obijackson Foundation, I sincerely express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Okija community,” he said.

Azudialu emphasized that the tragedy had strengthened the foundation’s resolve to continue its humanitarian work.

“This kind of tragedy can deter one from engaging in service, but we, as a foundation, are determined to ensure Okija never suffers such a calamity again.

“Together, we will rebuild and make Okija a safer and more united community,” he added.

Reflecting on the foundation’s 15-year history of philanthropy, Azudialu pledged continued support for the people of Okija.

“We are reminded of the importance of doing good. Our resolve to serve the Okija people remains steadfast.

“We will continue to bring succour and love to Okija and support families who lost their loved ones in every way possible,” he assured.

Recalled that the tragic incident occurred on December 21, 2024, during the distribution of palliatives organized by the Obijackson Foundation, founded by a notable community member, Ernest Azudialu Obiejesi.
