The Rivers State Police Command said on Wednesday that three of its female operatives have been detained for allegedly extorting money from motorists in Port Harcourt.
The detained female police officers are Inspector Sarah Anendei, Inspector Caroline Promise, and Inspector Christiana Jatau.
They were arrested at an unauthorized checkpoint under the Rumuokoro flyover in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
Superintendent of Police and Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the arrests, explaining that the officers were under surveillance following multiple complaints.
Reports indicate that the officers had been involved in such unlawful activities for an extended period.
Iringe-Koko noted that during the arrest, Inspectors Promise and Jatau were found out of uniform, violating police standards, and a search revealed cash believed to have been extorted from motorists.
“The arrests were part of a monitoring patrol by the Commissioner of Police team on October 29, 2024,” Iringe-Koko stated.
She described how the officers were caught red-handed by a mobile phone recording, which provided crucial evidence of their misconduct.
The officers are currently detained and awaiting disciplinary action.
The Rivers State Police Command emphasized its commitment to ethical policing and assured the public that any personnel engaged in unprofessional behavior would face appropriate consequences.
