A Non-governmental Organisation, Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR) has rejoiced and congratulated teachers across the country as they celebrate this year’s International Teachers Day, today, October 5, 20$6.
The organisation which is based in Lokoja, Kogi State, stated this in a congratulatory message to the teachers on Monday.
The statement signed by its Executive Director, Idris Miliki Abdul, said teachers
“are great people.
“Without teachers, there will be no doctors, lawyers, engineers, judges, governors and even presidents.
“We call on the Kogi State Government to, as a matter of urgency, employ more teachers in our basic schools in particular and across all educational institutions in Kogi State.
“The teachers need special treatment. Transportation should be provided across all the local governments to assist the students.
“The current fuel prices have imposed severe hardship on the students in Kogi State.
“A lot of schools need rehabilitation and improvement.
“The transportation sector has been left in the hands of the private sector.
“We wonder what the Ministry of Transportation is doing to alleviate the suffering of the citizens.
“In the last ten years, the Kogi State Government has failed to improve the transportation service.
“The inherited Confluence Transport is dead and its staff thrown out to the labour market.
“We call on the current Administration to declare a state of emergency in the transport sector and key into the Federal Government initiative and several other state governments to assist and alleviate the current situation of the citizens of Kogi State.
“Happy Teachers’ Day.”
