Popular Professor Of History And Pro Chancellor Of OAU, Siyan Oyeweso Dies At 64

One of Nigeria’s leading historians and the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State,Professor Siyan Oyeweso is dead.

Oyeweso, a native of Ede, Osun State, died in the early hours of Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

He was 64 years old, having been born on February 1, 1961.

His brother, Olawale Oyeweso, said that Prof. Oyeweso died on Tuesday December 2, 2025, after a brief illness.

He will be buried later on Tuesday at his country home in Ede, Osun State, in accordance with Islamic rites.

President Tinubu’s National Emergency Pronouncement, Continuation Of Efforts To Review Nigeria’s Security Architecture – TMSG

An emeritus Professor of History and one of Nigeria’s renowned historians, Oyeweso was Fellow of both the Historical Society of Nigeria (FHSN) and Nigerian Academy of Letters (FNAL).

Until his recent appointment at Pro-Chancelor of OAU on July 4, 2024, Oyeweso was immediate past Director of the UNIOSUN Business School and Provost of Osun State University Post-graduate College.

He was at various times pioneer and long standing member of the Governing Councils of Osun State University, the Federal Polytechnic Ede and Lagos State University (LASU).

A Visiting Professor and Executive Director at Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding (CBCIU), Osogbo, a UNESCO Category II Institute, Oyeweso authored over a dozen books and over 200 publications in the form of book chapters and journal articles.

His research works cover Higher Education, Cultural History of Nigeria, Yoruba Inter-state Warfare, Islam in Yorubaland and one of Nigeria’s leading authorities on the history of the Nigerian Civil War.

Oyeweso was into public history, using both conventional and digital platforms to enlighten the general public about Nigeria’s rich heritage.

He also helped to establish the Duro Ladipo Museum and Photographic Gallery and succeeded in establishing the Ulli Beier Archives as well as a national colloquium and exhibition celebrating renowned artist, Nike Okundaye.

Born on February 1, 1961, attended Oke Iragbiji Grammar School and Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife where he earned his first, second and doctorate degrees in History.

Oyeweso started his academic career in 1985 as an Assistant Lecturer in LASU where he became a full professor in 2004.
