Police in Osun State have confirmed the killing of one person in a shooting incident in Osogbo, shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke and his nephew, Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo.
The victim, identified as 60-year-old Tajudeen Yusuf of Oke-Ayepe, Osogbo, was allegedly shot by suspected hoodlums at Itaolokan area of the state capital on Wednesday.
The Osun State Police Command, in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said the incident occurred at about 4pm.
According to the police, trouble started after a suspected ex-convict and alleged member of the Eiye Confraternity, Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged,” attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of his security team.
The confrontation reportedly drew other suspected gang members, who temporarily blocked the palace entrance and obstructed the movement of the governor’s convoy before it eventually left the area safely.
The police said the suspected gang members later departed the vicinity but allegedly shot Yusuf at Itaolokan.
A police patrol team rushed to the scene after receiving the report and found the victim in a pool of blood.
He was taken to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The Commissioner of Police (Election), Osun State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the killing and ordered a full-scale investigation, assuring that the perpetrators would be identified, arrested and brought to justice.
The command also appealed to members of the public with relevant information to contact the nearest police station or the command through its official channels.
It urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, assuring that further updates would be released as the investigation progresses.
