Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State has declared the death of a former Governor of the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris as a major loss to Nigeria and Kogi State in particular.

Governor Ododo stated this while reacting to the death of former Governor Idris in far away UK in the early hours of Sunday, September 20, 2026.

The Governor then declared a three-day mourning period in honour of the former Governor

He directed that the national and state flags be flown at half-mast at government offices and other designated public institutions across the state throughout the mourning period.

Ododo also announced that the late former governor would be accorded a state burial, with the Kogi State Government bearing the expenses and making arrangements for the ceremony.

The governor had earlier visited the residence of the deceased in Abuja where he commiserated with members of the Idris family.

In a condolence letter to the family, Ododo said the death of Idris had deprived the state of an eminent citizen who devoted a significant part of his life to public service.

Idris served as governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2011, during which his administration implemented projects and programmes in infrastructure, education, healthcare and other sectors.

Ododo said the former governor’s contributions formed part of the developmental history of the state, adding that he would be remembered for his service to the people.

“His years in public office formed an important chapter in the political and developmental journey of Kogi State,” the governor said.

He urged members of the Idris family to draw strength from the memories of the deceased and the contributions he made to the development of the state.

The governor expressed condolences to the Idris family, friends, associates and other mourners, while praying to Almighty Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the deceased and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.

He also prayed for strength and fortitude for the family and the people of Kogi State to bear the loss.
