The National Population Commission (NPC) has called for increased investment in young people through quality education, healthcare, employment opportunities and active participation in governance, describing Nigeria’s youthful population as a critical asset for national development.
The call was made during the 2026 World Population Day celebration held at Silver Gate Hotel in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The event was organised by the NPC in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Kwara State Ministry of Planning and Economic Development.
The programme, themed “Realizing the Hopes and Aspirations of Young People – Today and for the Future,” attracted government officials, development partners, youth groups and students from Kwara State University, Al-Hikmah University and the Kwara State School of Nursing, among other stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, the Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission in Kwara State, Dr. Isiaka Alada Yahaya, said the country’s future depends largely on how well it empowers its young population.
According to him, the theme underscores the need to empower young people through quality education, accessible healthcare, decent employment opportunities, and meaningful participation in governance and decision-making processes.
He noted that Nigeria’s growing youth population presents enormous opportunities for national growth if properly harnessed.
The Commissioner added that investing in young people should be seen as both a moral responsibility and a strategic development priority.
Dr Alada also appreciated UNFPA, the Kwara State Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and other partners for their sustained collaboration in advancing population and development initiatives across the state.
Representatives of UNFPA and the Kwara State Ministry of Planning and Economic Development reaffirmed their commitment to supporting policies and programmes aimed at improving the health, education and general well-being of young people.
They also stressed the importance of reliable population data, evidence-based planning and strong partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals.
The event featured presentations and interactive sessions on youth empowerment, reproductive health, education, employment, leadership and the role of accurate population data in effective planning and policy formulation.
