The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed deep sympathy over the devastating flood that recently hit Mokwa town in Niger State, resulting in the loss of lives and widespread destruction of property.
In a statement issued by its Chairman and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the forum conveyed its solidarity with the government and people of the affected community.
“We are deeply shocked by the magnitude of the flooding, which has led to tragic loss of lives and extensive damage to property,” the NGF said.
The forum described the incident as a stark reminder of the escalating threat of climate change.
The governors commiserated with victims and their families, while also commending the swift response of the Niger State Government and emergency agencies for their support to displaced residents.
“We applaud the prompt actions taken by the Niger State Government and the coordination with emergency responders to assist affected individuals,” AbdulRazaq stated.
The NGF further called for stronger collaboration among states, federal agencies, and relevant institutions such as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), stressing the need for proactive strategies to address climate-induced disasters.
“This incident once again highlights the harsh realities of climate change and its impact on our communities.
“The forum remains committed to partnering with ONSA, NEMA, and other stakeholders to improve disaster preparedness, mitigation, and relief efforts,” the statement added.
The NGF offered prayers for the bereaved families and urged Nigerians to support ongoing efforts aimed at reducing risks associated with extreme weather events. (vitalnewsngr.com)
