Ilorin – Kwara State has formally flagged off Operation Savannah Shield, a joint security initiative aimed at tackling terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across the state and parts of Niger State.
The operation was flagged off on Thursday at Sobi Barracks, Ilorin, by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
Governor AbdulRazaq expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for swiftly approving the deployment, describing it as a “big relief” for the people.
He noted that the security threat is not only a danger to lives but also a challenge to food security, as many affected areas are major farming belts.
“Let me first of all thank the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the deployment of Operation Savannah Shield which will cover the entire Kwara State and parts of Niger State. This is a great relief.
“We have seen the escalation of bandit activities, especially in Kwara North and parts of Niger State over the past year. Kwara North remains a greater challenge, which is why we have this operation today. People will sleep better now.”
In a separate briefing, the Chief of Defence Staff said the operation is a proactive measure to neutralise criminal networks and secure lives and property.
“We are here to flag off a joint task force nicknamed Operation Savannah Shield.
“Under this umbrella, the Army, Navy, and Air Force components will work together to checkmate the activities of the enemies of the state.
This is not a temporary surge but a structured and sustained campaign,” Gen. Oluyede said.
The CDS added that the operation will focus on intelligence-driven and community-focused interventions, particularly in forested areas like Kainji National Park, which have been exploited by criminal elements.
He urged traditional rulers, youth leaders, and community members to cooperate by providing credible information to help restore law and order.
Lieutenant General Shaibu emphasized that the operation combines kinetic and non-kinetic approaches, including patrols, targeted operations, strategic communication, and community engagement, to ensure lasting peace and security.
Governor AbdulRazaq, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to safety and stability, said, “You have brought relief to us and we truly appreciate it.
“Our farmers and communities will now operate without fear, and the synergy between government and security agencies will protect lives, property, and livelihoods.”
