Lokoja – Some women politicians
in Kogi State have called on Governor Yahaya Bello to fulfill his promise to reserve some elective positions for them in line with women affirmative action.
The women who staged a peaceful protest on Monday in Lokoja to back up their demand said that Kogi West Senatorial district slot should be reserved for one of them, Mrs Adedoyin Ibikunle Eshanumi.
The protesters in their hundreds said Bello as the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
in the state should use his position to prevail on all male aspirants for the senatorial ticket to withdraw for Eshanumi.
The women in a procession through the Government House and other streets in Lokoja, appealed to Bello to assist women in Kogi
West by throwing his weight
behind their choice, Eshanumi.
Speaking on behalf of the women, Mrs Aisha Kasim and Mrs Oremisi Tosin from Lokoja and Kabba axis respectively, declared that the only woman aspirant for Kogi West Senatorial seat be given the chance.
“Yahaya Bello is a women friendly governor who has maintained his stand on offering equal opportunities for both male and female folks in politics.
“We remain grateful to God for Governor Bello’s fair disposition to women.
“We remember that the Governor
had earlier through his human
face policy ensured that women were elected into the office as vice chairmen in all the 21 local government areas of the state as well as their appointments into his cabinet and other government agencies and parastatals,” they said.
Both Kasim and Tosin appealed to Bello to further demonstrate his love for fairness, equity and justice in the distribution of political positions by making sure that Eshanumi emerge as the APC candidate for Kogi West senatorial district in 2023 elections.
