Lokoja -;The police in Lokojà said that one of the two policemen fatally wounded on Wednesday by yet to be identified gunmen is dead.

The late policeman sustained gunshot injury alongside a colleague when gunmen opened fire on them while on patrol duty on Agbaja -Lokoja road in Kogi State.

The incident happened Wednesday morning.

Two police officers instantly died on the spot while two others were fatally wounded.

However, one, of the two fatally wounded policemen later died while undergoing treatment at an undisclosed hospital, thereby increasing the number casualty to three.

SP William Aya, the state police command Public Relation Officer, confirmed the death of the third policeman to vitalnews during a telephone interview.

He said the second injured policeman is responding to treatment.

Police is yet to disclose the identities of the three slain policemen.

Aya had while confirming the attack on the police patrol team to newsmen in Lokojà on Wednesday said “the hoodlums emerged from the bush and attacked the team when they arrived for their routine patrol.”

Meanwhile the state Commissioner of police, Akeem Yusuf has ordered adequate tight security measures in all parts of the state .

A statement issued in Lokoja on Thursday by the police command spokesman, SP William Aya said

Yusuf gave the order ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations .

The Commissioner
ordered all the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) throughout the State and their supervisory Area Commanders as well as tactical Commanders to initiate and implement well-coordinated crime prevention strategies to beef up security towards the Christmas and New Year Celebrations in the state.

“They have been ordered to amongst other activities, massively deploy human, intelligence, and operational assets of the force at their disposal to major highways, places of worship, recreational centers, marketplaces, motor parks, and other places of public interest.

“He further tasked them to ensure round-the-clock visibility and confidence-boosting patrols,” Aya said in the statement.

Yusuf also enjoined the people to co-operate with police officers and other security agents by assisting them with useful information.

He reiterated the ban on the use of fireworks and warns against the use of such items.

“He further emphasized that citizens should keep Police emergency phone lines handy and contact the nearest Police station in the event of any untoward situation that may pose threats to public peace, safety, and security.

“The Commissioner of Police on behalf of the entire officers of the Kogi Police Command wishes Kogites a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year,” the statement said.
