In response to increasing cases of robbery targeting students, the management of Kwara State University (KWASU) and the Malete community have jointly enforced new restrictions on movement and activities, particularly at night.
Under the new guidelines, commercial motorcyclists are barred from operating beyond 10 p.m., while all commercial activities and general movement must stop by 11 p.m.
The use of generators is also prohibited beyond midnight, and night parties are no longer allowed within the community.
These measures were unanimously agreed upon at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Monday, June 23, 2025.
The meeting was convened by KWASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Alade Jimoh, and had in attendance key players from the university’s management, the leadership of Moro Local Government, traditional rulers, security agencies, the student union, and the alumni body.
Professor Jimoh described the move as necessary, stressing that the safety of students and residents remains the university’s top priority.
“We cannot fold our arms while our students live in fear.
“These decisions were not made lightly—they are steps we must take to protect lives and restore calm,” he said.
As part of broader security strategies, a joint security committee has also been formed, drawing members from the university, the student body, the Malete community, and relevant security agencies.
Private hostel operators are now mandated to provide security personnel for each facility, and professional vigilantes will be employed to support existing security operations.
The Chairperson of Moro Local Government Council, Hajia Mariam Abdulwasiu, pledged full support for the initiative, noting that the council would take legal steps to back the restrictions with a formal bylaw.
“We commend the KWASU management for its swift and decisive action.
“To support this effort, we will recruit 10 additional vigilantes and provide them with the equipment needed to carry out their duties effectively,” she said.
She added that a new power transformer would be installed to improve electricity supply, and gates would be erected at entry points to the town to regulate night movement.
Hajia Abdulwasiu also announced a donation of one million Naira to assist victims of the most recent robbery incident.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to security personnel.
The university’s management and the local government say they are committed to restoring safety and peace to the community.
