The Muslim Rights Concern ((MURIC) has filed and served a notice of appeal together with a motion for stay of execution/injunction
pending appeal of the judgment delivered on Friday by the Court of Appeal, Ibadan, in favour of the UI International School Ibadan over wearing of hijab by female students of the school.
A state high court in Ibadan had earlier ruled that the female students are free free to wear hijab on their school uniform in line with an earlier judgment of the Supreme Court on the matter.
However, the Appeal Court sitting in Ibadan, in its split decision delivered today, July 3, 2026, ruled that the jSupreme Court judgment, only applied to public schools and not private schools.
The Appellate Court ruled that private schools are free to enforce dress code, thereby given the management of UI ISI legal backing to ban wearing of hijab in the school.
In a swift response, the Incorporated Trustees of the Muslim Rights Concern ((MURIC) immediately filed appeal against the judgement today, 3rd July, 2026.
“The legal implication is that the International School, University of Ibadan, which we believe is a law abiding educational institution, cannot lawfully prevent Muslim students from wearing the hijab pending the hearing and determination of the Motion for Stay of Execution/Injunction pending appeal
“Members of the public, parents, and affected students are kindly advised to remain calm while the legal process runs its course,” MURIC said in a statement announcing its decision to further the case to the Supreme Court.
