Lawal Sale, a Nigerian writer and publisher of an online news platform, Global South Focus (GSF), has received a prestigious award at the 2nd Silk Road Global News (SRGN) Awards, held on Tuesday in Kunming, China.
Sale’s entry, “China’s Belt and Road Initiative @ 10: A Decade of Remarkable Achievements and Development,” was recognized in the Best Reporting category.
The article was among the 10 longlisted favorites, due to its rich quality, among over 5,000 entries received from 110 countries and regions.
The SRGN Awards, a flagship project of the Belt and Road News Network (BRNN), are chaired by the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee.
The awards were included on the list of deliverables for the Belt and Road Media Forum on international cooperation, underscoring a growing global importance.
After two rounds of rigorous evaluation by both academic and judging committees, a total of 58 entries from 37 countries were selected as awardees across four categories: Best Reporting, Best Photography, Best Video, and Best Innovation.
Every category had one winner, four shortlisted winners, and 10 longlisted winners.
The results were officially announced at the Media Cooperation Forum and SRGN award ceremony, hosted by the People’s Daily at the Haigeng Convention Center in Kunming.
The event drew over 200 global representatives from 87 countries, alongside international and regional organizations and more than 165 media outlets.

Chinese officials, entrepreneurs, and media executives from around the world were also in attendance.
Speaking via telephone after receiving the award, a visibly ecstatic Sale expressed his pride and excitement at being among the awardees.
He attributed his success to a combination of “hard work, consistency, and an undying passion for writing” that he has nurtured for over two decades.
“It was not easy to scale through a hurdle where thousands of other contestants submitted entries on the same topic,” Sale said, noting that he has more than 30 published articles to his name.
He hailed the organizers for “this noble initiative,” adding that the BRNN plays an important role in fostering media cooperation and cultural exchange along the new Silk Road.
