Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned his position as the National Chairman of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ganduje who resigned on Friday cited deteriorating health condition as reason for his action.
Insiders source said Ganduje handed over his resignation letter to the national Secretary of the APC, Senator Bashiru Ajibola.
He was said to have handed his letter of resignation to Ajibola late evening of Thursday, June 26, 2025.
Sources said Ganduje resignation was actually informed by his deteriorating health condition that has been limiting his ability to effectively perform his functions as the National Chairman of APC.
“The Chairman has been battling health challenges for some time, and it reached a point where he could no longer continue,” a senior APC official said on condition of anonymity, told reporters.
Ganduje stepped in as the National Chairman in August 2023, following the sudden exit by way of resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu of Nasarawa State as the national Chairman of the party.
His leadership, however, faced challenges, including allegations of mismanagement and internal factionalism, which some analysts suggest may have compounded the pressures of his role.
The handover to Senator Basiru, a seasoned politician and former Senate spokesperson, is seen as a temporary measure to ensure continuity.
Party insiders indicate that the NWC is already deliberating on a permanent replacement, with names of ex-Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura circulating as potential contenders.
Sources said APC is likely to convene an emergency meeting next week to chart the path forward.
