The Court of Appeal in Abuja has set up a three-member panel to handle the political cases from Rivers State.
To this end, the court will begin hearings on Thursday, November 14.
The set up of the special panel by President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, id to streamline and address the growing list of appeals related to the political conflict in Rivers State.
Headed by Justice Onyekachi Otisi, with Justices Misitura Bokaji-Yusuf and James Abundaga, the panel will preside over key cases, including one involving Governor Fubara, the Rivers State House of Assembly, and appeals relating to the alleged defection of 27 lawmakers from the PDP to the APC.
The goal is to provide a swift, centralized resolution to the political issues fueling divisions in the state.
During a session on Monday, Justice Hamma Barka, a member of the Court of Appeal, announced that three ongoing cases, including one filed by the Rivers State Government against the state’s House of Assembly, will be transferred to the special panel.
Attorney Paul Erokoro, representing one of the appellants, indicated that necessary documents would be served to respondents by Thursday.
Both parties agreed to the adjournment until the special panel’s session begins.
This initiative represents a significant effort by the judiciary to expedite the resolution of Rivers State’s political disputes, bringing order to an otherwise tumultuous environment for state politics.
