A PROMISE FULFILLED : OLUREMI TINUBU’S ₦10 MILLION GIFT AND THE POWER OF PURPOSEFUL PHILANTHROPY

Sometimes, the future of a nation does not arrive with the noise of a grand ceremony.
It announces itself quietly—in a classroom, on a football field, inside a workshop, behind a computer screen or on the pages of a child’s sketchbook.
And sometimes, all that future needs is for someone to notice.
The tragedy is not always that talent is absent. More often, it is that talent exists but remains unseen, unsupported and eventually extinguished by circumstances.
This is why the story of 12-year-old Ogun State artist, Master Morenikeji Ebunoluwa Joshua, deserves more than passing applause.
It deserves to be told, celebrated and, more importantly, understood as a lesson in what purposeful philanthropy can achieve.
On August 18, 2026, at the launch of the South-West Zonal National Food Bank Programme at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, young Joshua displayed a portrait he had painstakingly painted of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The painting caught her attention.
But beyond the portrait was a child with an extraordinary gift—and the First Lady did something that can sometimes be as powerful as the gift itself : she stopped to see him.
She invited the young artist to the podium and pledged ₦10 million towards his education.
Less than a month later, that pledge has become a reality.
The First Lady has fulfilled her promise through the establishment of an Education Development Trust Fund to support Joshua through tertiary education, with an account specifically opened to preserve the fund for his educational needs.
That is the difference between a promise that generates applause and a promise that changes a life.
The significance of the gesture therefore lies not merely in the ₦10 million involved. It lies in the speed, structure and purpose with which the promise was fulfilled.
In a society where public pledges can sometimes fade with the applause that greeted them, Senator Tinubu has demonstrated that compassion acquires its fullest meaning when intention is followed by action.
A promise made to a child is not merely a ceremonial statement.
It is a moral obligation.
There is, however, another important dimension to Joshua’s story.
His journey of recognition did not begin on that August afternoon.
Three years earlier, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, had encountered Joshua’s work at an exhibition.
Upon learning that the talented artist was still in primary school, the Governor awarded him a scholarship covering his primary and secondary education.
That intervention created the first bridge between talent and opportunity.
The First Lady’s intervention has now extended that bridge to tertiary education.
This is how a chain of public good is built.
One person identifies a gift. Another strengthens it. An institution provides structure.
And a child who might otherwise have been constrained by circumstance is given the confidence and opportunity to imagine a much larger future.
Governor Abiodun deserves commendation for recognising Joshua early and investing in his education.
Senator Tinubu deserves equal commendation for seeing the same promise, responding generously and, most importantly, keeping her word.
There is something profound about that sequence.
It tells a child that his talent matters.
It tells him that his circumstances do not have to define his destiny.
And perhaps most importantly, it tells him that society has not forgotten him.
That is the deeper meaning of purposeful philanthropy.
We must therefore resist the temptation to treat Joshua’s story as merely a heart-warming episode to be admired today and forgotten tomorrow.
Nigeria is filled with Joshuas.
They are in classrooms in rural communities. They are in crowded neighbourhoods and underserved schools.
They are on football pitches, in music studios, at roadside workshops and behind improvised computers.
They are young inventors without tools, brilliant pupils without school fees, athletes without equipment, musicians without instruments, artists without materials and exceptional children whose potential is constantly threatened by circumstances beyond their control.
Their greatest disadvantage may not be a lack of ability.
It may simply be that nobody has seen them.
Or that someone saw them but did nothing.
Purposeful philanthropy changes that equation.
It is not the random distribution of money. It is the deliberate conversion of private means into public hope.
It identifies genuine need, recognises measurable potential and creates a structure that allows the beneficiary to grow with dignity.
The Education Development Trust Fund created for Joshua is particularly instructive because it goes beyond an immediate cash gift.
It creates a mechanism for preserving the intervention and directing it towards a sustainable outcome.
A cheque may open a door.
But education, mentoring, monitoring and sustained encouragement help a young person walk through that door and discover what lies beyond it.
Not everyone can give ₦10 million.
But everyone who has been blessed with some measure of influence, knowledge, access or resources can do something.
One person can pay a child’s WAEC or JAMB fees. A business can equip a school laboratory or sponsor vocational training.
A lawyer, doctor, engineer, artist or retired public officer can mentor a promising young person.
Alumni associations can establish scholarship funds. Religious organisations can support indigent families. Nigerians in the diaspora can adopt schools, clinics or community projects.
Sometimes, it does not even require money.
A word of encouragement.
A lesson.
A referral.
A useful introduction.
An opportunity to exhibit a talent.
The opening of one door can change the trajectory of an entire life.
Corporate organisations, too, should move beyond occasional publicity-driven donations and make talent development a more serious component of their social responsibility.
Traditional rulers, political leaders, professionals, philanthropists and community associations can establish credible platforms for identifying exceptional children and connecting them with sponsors.
Imagine the possibilities if every prosperous Nigerian deliberately supported one deserving child.
Imagine the impact if every successful professional mentored one young person.
Imagine what could happen if every viable institution adopted one school, one community project or one talent-development initiative.
The cumulative effect would be enormous.
This is where philanthropy transcends charity and becomes nation-building.
There is also a security dimension to this conversation.
A society that gives its young people education, recognition, dignity and a legitimate path to achievement strengthens their sense of belonging.
It reduces the despair and hopelessness that can make vulnerable young minds susceptible to crime, substance abuse, extremism and other forms of exploitation.
Every properly supported child is therefore more than a life improved.
It is resilience added to society.
It is one less young mind abandoned to despair.
It is one more citizen equipped to contribute meaningfully to the future.
Philanthropy, of course, cannot replace government. Government retains the primary responsibility for education, healthcare, welfare and equal opportunity.
But philanthropy can complement public policy by responding quickly, personally and creatively to individual circumstances that may require special intervention.
The most powerful results often occur when government, private citizens and institutions reinforce one another.
Joshua’s story offers a beautiful example.
Governor Abiodun recognised the talent and provided the educational foundation.
Senator Tinubu encountered the young artist, recognised his promise and extended the intervention into the tertiary years. The result is not simply two acts of generosity.
It is a continuum of opportunity.
And that may ultimately be the greatest gift of all.
The portrait painted by young Joshua captured a face.
The generosity it inspired may now help redraw his future.
There is poetry in that.
A child picked up a brush to paint a portrait, and in the process, painted a new chapter of his own life.
That is the enduring power of philanthropy.
It sees possibility where others may see only need. It recognises potential before the world has fully discovered it. And it converts privilege into opportunity for another human being.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu has lifted one gifted child.
Her example can inspire the lifting of thousands more.
Let those who have means look around their communities.
Let them find a Joshua waiting to be seen.
A dream waiting to be protected.
A talent waiting for encouragement.
A life waiting for one decisive intervention.
Because when generosity is joined with discernment, structure and fidelity to promise, philanthropy becomes more than charity.
It becomes an investment in human potential.
And when human potential is deliberately nurtured, a nation does not merely help one child to succeed.
It helps build the future.
