Lokoja – Suspected gunmen have invaded a market in Kogi State, killing one person and abducting unspecified number of people.

Spokesman of the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Aya confirmed the incident in Lokoja on Monday.

He said the incident happened on Sunday at Orie market in Agbedo community, Akpayan in Igalamela/Odolu Local area of the state.

Aya, however, stated that it was a case of invasion of a shop belonging to one Johnson.

He said that the bandits killed Johnson in the process and abducted a man identified as Edwin and many others.

Aya said that Police was already on the trail of the gunmen to rescue the victims and arrest the bandits.

However, it was gathered, that the bandits had established contacts with relations of the kidnapped persons with a demand of N20 million for their release.

Eyewitness , however, said the gunmen came on motorcycles and invaded the market at about 2 pm.

On arrival, they started shooting sporadically into the air to scare the people in the market.

The market was then thrown into a pandemonium as both buyers and traders scampered for safety to avoid being hit by bullets.

It was gathered that the incident was third in a row in the past one year with many abducted.

The gunmen were said to be taking advantage of the thick forest between Kogi, Enugu, and Anambra States to perpetrate their evil acts.

Akpayan is a boundary community between the three states. (vitalnewsngr.com)
