A foiled daylight robbery targeting three major banks in Labone, Accra, has ended with one suspect arrested and two others shot dead by Ghana Police.
The horrifying robbery tourism to Ghana was allegedly spearheaded by a Nigerian ringleader
The suspect, identified as Nigerian national Augustine Okechuku Maazi, is currently in custody assisting investigations, the Ghana Police Service said in a statement.
According to police, officers received intelligence at about 10:45am on August 13 that a gang was planning coordinated attacks on GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank in the Labone area.
A rapid deployment team moved in and spotted the gang in two vehicles parked near the banks.
“Upon sighting the Police, one of the vehicles sped off in an attempt to escape,” the statement read.
“The Police gave them a chase and arrested one suspect, Augustine Okechuku Maazi. The other occupant however, managed to escape.”
Police said the occupants of the second vehicle also tried to flee and opened fire.
Officers returned fire in a shootout that left two suspects dead.
A search of the scene yielded two vehicles — a Toyota Highlander with registration GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration GS 7915-17 — plus a ‘toy pistol.’
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
Maazi remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Police have assured the public of increased patrols around financial institutions in Accra following the incident.
