– 76 Years After Maiden Showing, Nigeria Set for 20th Commonwealth Games Appearance at Glasgow 2026

The wait is finally over as the 23rd Commonwealth Games officially gets underway today in Glasgow, Scotland, with Team Nigeria ready to begin its campaign alongside thousands of athletes from across the Commonwealth.

The Glasgow 2026 Games, which run from July 23 to August 2, mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s sporting history as the nation makes its 20th appearance at the Commonwealth Games, exactly 76 years after its debut at the Auckland 1950 Games in Australia.

Since that first outing, Nigeria has grown into one of the competition’s traditional sporting powerhouses, producing generations of Commonwealth champions across athletics, boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, para sports and other disciplines.

Nigeria’s full delegation is now on ground in Glasgow, with all 74 athletes settled in the Games Village ahead of the start of competition.

The contingent is also accompanied by top sports administrators and distinguished personalities, including National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, Commonwealth Games Ambassadors, former Directors General of the National Sports Commission Gbenga Elegbeleye and Alhassan Yakmut, respected sports administrator Dr. Amos Adamu, and veteran broadcaster Victor Iroele.

As they march into the OVO Hydro for the Opening Ceremony, Nigerian athletes will be represented in their strikingly radiant green-and-white traditional ceremonial outfits, proudly showcasing the nation’s colours and rich cultural identity before a global audience.

The elegant attire makes Team Nigeria one of the standout delegations during the Parade of Nations as the Green and White officially announces its arrival at Glasgow 2026.

The Commonwealth Games remains one of the world’s premier international multi-sport events, bringing together athletes from the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.

The Games were first staged in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930, featuring 11 participating nations, and have since evolved into one of the biggest celebrations of sport and unity within the Commonwealth.

This year’s Games will feature approximately 3,000 athletes competing for 215 gold medals across 10 sports, with competition taking place at world-class venues across Glasgow.

The iconic OVO Hydro will host the Opening Ceremony, officially launching the Games before serving as one of the principal competition venues throughout the event.

The Opening Ceremony promises a spectacular celebration of Scottish culture, led by acclaimed singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, alongside performances by Callum Beattie, Nina Nesbitt, Nathan Evans and SAINT PHNX, while electronic folk duo Valtos will provide the soundtrack for the Parade of Nations.

The ceremony will also mark the conclusion of the King’s Baton Relay and will be attended by His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who are expected to officially declare the Games open.

For Team Nigeria, Glasgow 2026 represents another opportunity to build on a proud Commonwealth Games legacy that spans more than seven decades.

Backed by months of preparation, enhanced athlete welfare initiatives introduced by the National Sports Commission, and a team featuring world champions, Paralympic champions, Commonwealth champions and rising stars, Nigeria will be aiming to once again leave its mark on one of the biggest stages in international sport.
