Fresh fears have gripped communities in Kwara South Senatorial District following the killing of two local hunters by suspected bandits in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The victims were killed on Tuesday while escorting a convoy travelling from Oro-Ago to Oke-Oyan in Ilere district.
Sources said the gunmen ambushed the convoy but were resisted by other security escorts, preventing further casualties.
According to community sources, the attackers also made away with the motorcycles belonging to the slain hunters after the operation.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident has heightened anxiety across the area, noting that the assailants appear to be targeting local security operatives.
“These criminals seem to have detailed information about our hunters and vigilantes.
“They are eliminating them to weaken local resistance,” the source said.
Despite the attack, members of the convoy escaped unharmed due to the intervention of other guards who engaged the bandits.
Residents are now calling on Kwara State Government and security agencies to urgently intervene and prevent further loss of lives.
“We need more security presence here. Our people are living in fear daily,” another resident lamented.
The latest incident comes barely days after armed men stormed an ECWA church in Omugo via Oro-Ago, where eight worshippers, including a pastor’s wife, were abducted.
Three of the victims were later rescued by a joint security team.
Security concerns in the district had earlier been raised by the Coordinator of the Joint Security Watch in Kwara South, Olaitan Zubair, who warned of looming threats and criticised what he described as a lack of proactive response by political leaders.
“We have consistently raised alarms about the deteriorating security situation, but the response has not matched the urgency required,” Zubair said, urging stakeholders to act swiftly to safeguard lives and property.
The recurring attacks have left many residents worried about their safety, with calls growing louder for coordinated security operations to curb the rising menace of banditry in the region.
