The body of former President Muhammadu Buhari was on Tuesday laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, amid solemn tributes, emotional expressions, and prayers for the repose of his soul.
The funeral prayer, conducted according to Islamic rites, was led by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, the Imam of the Daura Central Mosque.
The prayer was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the late president’s family, close relatives, the Emir of Daura, top government officials, political party representatives, and members of the diplomatic corps.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who succeeded Buhari in office, had received condolences at the residence of the deceased from high-profile dignitaries who came to pay their last respects.
Buhari’s state funeral was marked by full military honours, including a 21-gun salute in recognition of his service as Nigeria’s former Head of State and Commander-in-Chief.
Earlier, Buhari’s body was received in Daura by President Tinubu; President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau; Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine; former Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou; and former Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
A military honour guard comprising nine senior officers carried the casket, which was draped in the national flag, and wheeled it in a slow ceremonial march to the hymn “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.”
The procession passed through a guard of honour consisting of six officers and 96 soldiers from the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The former Nigeria’s president died in a London clinic on Sunday, July 13, 2025 at the age of 82 years.
He is survived by his wife, Hajia Aisha Buhari and eight children.
