Christopher Eleghu, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for Onuimo constituency, Imo state house of assembly in 2023 general election was killed by yet to be identified gunmen in his home early Friday.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen also set Eleghu’s home ablaze and destroyed several properties.
The gunmen reportedly also targeted some politicians in the area
“They have killed Christopher Elehu, popularly known as Wasco. Until his death he was the Labour Party candidate in Onuimo Local Government Area.
“They invaded his house when everybody had gone to sleep and shot for over two hours.
“They killed the man and burnt his house. They also destroyed his property. His corpse was laying on the floor with matchet cuts when villagers gathered in the morning,” a witness was quoted as saying in some reports.
It will be recalled that the Women Leader of Labour Party in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Victoria Chintex, was also some weeks ago murdered in her residence by yet to be identified assassins.
However, Imo State has witnessed a series of violent attacks in recent times.
Just last Monday, gunmen attempted to burn the Owerri, Imo state head office of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) among other acts of violence attributed to unknown gunmen in the state.
Another Labour party candidate Chukwunonye Irouno had also recently passed just before the party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi’s campaign rally in Owerri.
