The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesman, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu.

The statement said more than 30 passengers have been rescued so far.

The victims were said to include mainly women and children travelling with their goods from Ibaji Local Government of Kogi State to Onitsha, Anambra State.

Tochukwu said marine operatives from the state Police Command on getting a distress call rushed to the scene and were able to rescue about 30 of the passengers.
