Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency says 4, 860 domestic and sexual violence cases were recorded in the state in the last nine months.

It also said 11 women died from domestic violence incidents in the same months.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, disclosed this on Monday, during a two-day training for Police prosecutors, state prosecutors and family support units in police stations in Lagos.

According to her, while five women have died from domestic violence this year, six women died last year.

She said all the men involved are already being prosecuted and are in custody.

She said the training was put together to help prosecutors understand best practices in prosecuting sexual and gender-based violence cases.

According to her, state and police prosecutors play a very important role in ensuring justice for domestic and sexual violence survivors.

She added that it is the reason that they need to have very deep knowledge about what domestic and sexual violence is and how to handle the cases.

She further said that would help prosecutors to the victims and survivors had gone or going through as a result of their experience.

One of the facilitators, Mrs Atinuke Odukoya, said the training was critical because it would help prosecutors to adopt the survivor centres approach, which would help victims and survivors to get justice.

She was optimistic that once victims and survivors begin to get justice, it will help to reduce cases of domestic and sexual violence.
