Troops of the 22 Armoured Brigade, operating from the Forward Operating Base in Babana, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, have dealt a heavy blow to armed bandits who attempted to infiltrate the community in the early hours of Thursday.
The attack, which occurred around 2:50 a.m., was repelled after soldiers engaged the criminals in a fierce exchange of fire.
According to military sources, the superior firepower of the troops forced the bandits to retreat in disarray.
Two of the assailants were also neutralised during a follow-up operation on the outskirts of Babana.
Recovered from the encounter were an AK-47 rifle, four magazines loaded with 60 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 323 rounds of 7.62x54mm ammunition, and a mobile phone.

However, the clash was not without casualties, as an officer and a soldier sustained gunshot injuries to their legs.
They are said to be responding well to medical treatment.
Speaking on the success, the Commander of 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, praised the courage of his men.
“Our troops have once again demonstrated vigilance, resilience, and doggedness.
“We will continue to intensify operations and use all legitimate means to rid the area of criminal elements,” he said.
He assured residents that the military remains committed to protecting lives and property across Niger State and its environs. (vitalnewsngr.com)
