President Bola Tinubu has approved lifetime payment of salary to retiring senior officers of paramilitary agencies under the Ministry of Interior.

The new policy affects only officers retiring on the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this in Abuja on Thursday

Tunji – Ojo said the new
initiative, is aimed at boosting officers’ welfare, while in service and after retirement.

The Minister made the disclosure while speaking at a retreat where he outlined the ministry’s achievements and reaffirmed its commitment to institutional reforms across its agencies.

In a statement signed by DCF P.O. Abraham, NPRO and Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, the minister expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support.

He noted that agencies under the Interior Ministry are already reaping the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to Tunji-Ojo, the long-standing backlog of officers’ promotions have been cleared, with over 50,000 officers elevated within the last two years.

He added that future promotions will now be strictly determined by merit, guided by a new performance-based system.

As part of ongoing institutional reforms, the minister disclosed the development of updated training manuals and the ongoing construction of a world-class Fire Academy designed to rival international institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy.

He also stressed the ministry’s commitment to improving workplace mental health and pledged full support for officers in this regard.

Furthermore, the minister urged the Federal Fire Service to pursue strategic partnerships with the private sector.

He noted that such collaborations are critical for modernising firefighting operations, improving infrastructure, and strengthening service delivery across Nigeria.
