Some students of Namnai Government Secondary School, in Gassol Local Government in Taraba State have narrowly escaped death when the walls of classrooms in which they were taking the West African School Certificate Examination suddenly collapsed on them.
The wall collapse incident which happened on Wednesday was believed to be as a result of a heavy downpour and wind storm.
The students and their invigilators were said to be trapped in the rubbles of the collapsed classroom buildings for sometime before residents of the community came to their rescue.
A resident, Malam Umaru Buba who participated in the rescue operation, told Vital News that it was the second set of the students that the classrooms collapsed on
He said the first set had finished their exams and left the school premises.
Umaru who said the incident happened at about 6pm on Wednesday, stated that injured students and teachers were moved a Primary Healthcare Centre within the community where they are currently receiving treatment.
Apart from the school, the storm had also destroyed several buildings in the community.
Meanwhile, the Taraba State Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas has directed the Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education Dr. Augustina Godwin to visit the area and assess the situation.
He has on Thursday also directed the Ministry to foot the medical bills of those affected.
