Ibadan – Oyo State recorded nine suicide cases, 351 deaths and 751 road accidents from January to September this year, the state police command has confirmed.
The State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Williams disclosed this in Ibadan on Wednesday while speaking with newsmen.
He said 223 out of the recorded accident cases were fatal, 305 serious and 223 were minor.
Williams explained that 351 persons died in the accidents that occurred at different locations in the state while 351 persons were critically injured.
He attributed the increasing rate of accidents in the state overspeeding and driving against traffic.
Other factors he mentioned include aggressive driving, burst tyres while in motion and brake failures.
The Commissioner said nine suicide cases were also recorded the state during the period under review.
He said five of the suicide victims have been confirmed dead, three under investigation and one is yet to be confirmed.
Williams who expressed concern over the high rate if suicide charged religious leaders, traditional rulers and family heads in the state to live up to their billings.
He urged to device means of changing the mindset of the younger ones through proper counselling and admonitions.
He announced plans by the State Police Command to commence stop and search of motorcycles in all the 33 local government areas of the State.
The Commissioner said the plan had become necessary to checkmate the activities of armed robbers, bandits and other criminal elements using motorcycles to perpetrate crimes in the state.
He called on the general public to cooperate with the police in order to flush out criminals from their various hideouts in the state.( vitalnewsngr.com)
