Lokoja – One person died and six others were seriously injured in two separate motor accidents that occurred in Lokoja, Kogi State on Monday.
The state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Stephen Dawulung confirmed the accidents to newsmen on Tuesday.
He said the first accident involved a truck and a commercial motorcycle in which the truck crushed the motorcyclist to death at a spot on IBB Road, Lokoja.
Dawulung who described the accident as unfortunate said the corpse of the motorcyclist had been deposited at the Morgue of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja.
He lamented the reckles driving of both the truck driver and the late motorcyclist, saying that the accident was avoidable.
“Most times you see them competing on the roads for no just cause but only to put their lives and those of their passengers at risk.
“The result of such bad road usage has always been auto crashes and jeopardising lives, ” Dawulung said.
While sympathising with the relations of the victim, the Sector Commander advised motorcyclists to adhere to stipulated speed limits, avoid contests with other vehicles and observe safety protocols such as the use of helmets to eradicate the risk of being involved in crashes.
Dawulung said the second accident occurred in the evening on Monday at
Navy base check point, Banda, on Koton-Karfe -Lokoja road.
He blamed the accident on speeding, saying that six persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident.
He said their vehicle lost control and summersaulted before running into the bush.
“My officers, who were at hand shortly after the incident, rushed the victims to a hospital for medical treatment, ” he said.
The sector commander warned motorists against non observance of traffic rules and regulations, warning them against speeding in the current rainy season.
“With the onset of the rains, road surfaces are normally slippery. This situation is normally complicated by poor visibility when driving in the rain.
“Drivers should therefore avoid speed to enable them have firm control over their vehicles at emergency times,” Dawulung said. (vitalnewsngr.com)
