Isiguzo Urges Journalists To Continue To Exhibit Integrity, Courage, Excellence

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo has called in journalists in the country to
continue to shape the narrative of the society with integrity, courage, and a dedication to excellence.

Isiguzo , made the charge in Lokoja on Wednesday while speaking at the grand finale of the 2023 Press Week of the NUJ, Kogi State Council.

According to him, that is the only way to honor the legacy of pioneers of the profession of journalism in the country.

He reminded journalists that the coming of ICT has further pushed news stories to travel at the speed of light, a development which he said has put journalists under immense responsibility.

“Our duty to report accurately, fairly, and fearlessly is our pledge to the public, a covenant that underscores the importance of our role in shaping public,” he said.

As the November 11, 2023 governorship election in Kogi State draws near, Isiguzo urged journalists to be fair to all parties contesting the election.

“Our duty to report accurately, fairly, and fearlessly is our pledge to the public, a covenant that underscores the importance of our role in shaping public discourse, influencing policy, and fostering social change.

“The stories we tell, the issues we highlight, and the voices we amplify contribute to the fabric of our society’s narrative,” he stated.

The NUJ President also advised them to allow the spirit of journalistic camaraderie and professional growth continue to thrive in Kogi State and beyond.

Chairman of the occasion who is also the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Dr Usman Ogbo delivering his speech at the event.

He urged journalists to be wary of overheating the polity, adding that discerning journalists should be able to separate serious politicians from genuine ones.

Isiguzo described the forthcoming Kogi Governorship Election as one that would enthrone a leader that would govern the whole state and not a section of the State, saying that promoting sectional interests would not do the state any good.

He cautioned journalists to be professional and unbiased in the reporting of the governorship election, pointing out that the Kogi election was about the people and not a section.

The NUJ President commended the Chairman of the state council of NUJ, Comrade Adeiza Momojimoh for organising remarkable events to marks the grand finale of the 2023 Press Week.

“This week has been a journey of enlightenment, camaraderie, and shared aspirations, a testament to the unwavering dedication and professionalism that define journalists in Kogi State.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Kogi State Council for orchestrating an exceptional Press Week, a testament to your commitment to promoting excellence, fostering growth, and upholding the highest standards of journalism,” he said .

On the unveiling of the book “Media Development in Kogi State, 1999-2023,” the NUJ described it as a “remarkable literary endeavor that captures the evolution of media in this state over a span of twenty-four years.

“I am particularly honored to have contributed the foreword to this significant publication.”

Highlight of the event was the conferment of awards on six individuals who have distinguished themselves in their various fields of human endeavour.
