Gunmen have attacked a mining site located at Oreke-Okeigbo community in Kwara State, killing two mobile police officers and abducting a Chinese national and one other person in the process.
The also gunmen went away with the service rifles of the slain officers.
The killed officers were Assistant Superintendent of Police Haruna Watsai and Inspector Tukur Ogah.
The incident happened around 6:30pm of June 4, 2025.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.
The statement said assailants stormed the mining facility and opened fire, killing the two mobile police officers on duty at the site.
The statement said : “Both officers were attached to the 45 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Abuja.
“Their service rifles were taken by the attackers.
The gunmen also abducted two workers from the site: Mr. Sam Xie Wie, a Chinese national, and Mr. David Adenaiye, a Nigerian from Kogi State.
Condemning the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Adekimi Ojo, said the Command has launched a manhunt to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of the abducted victims.
“This is a tragic and unacceptable act.
“We have deployed tactical teams and are working closely with other security agencies and local stakeholders to ensure the victims are rescued and justice is served,” CP Ojo stated.
He appealed to residents to remain calm and support security operatives by providing timely and credible information that could help in the ongoing investigation.
“We are committed to protecting lives and property across Kwara.
“This unfortunate event will not deter our efforts,” he added.
The police say updates will be shared as investigations continue.
