The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has alerted Lagos, FCT and 26 other states across the country to impending heavy floods between August 7 and August 21, 2025

Other states to experience high flood risks on the days mentioned are Adamawa, Delta, Benue, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Bauchi, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Akwa Ibom, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

Others are Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, and Cross River.

The agency in a flood alert issued on Thursday by its Director – General, Umar Ibrahim said the states and FCT will experience high to very high flood risks between August 7 and August 21, 2025

He said flood atert was issued due to the rising river levels and persistent rainfall the listed states are likely to experience during the period.

According the Director General, a total of 198 LGAs and 832 communities fall within the projected flood impact zone.

The agency recommended that evacuation plans be established for communities that are at risk and urged emergency management stakeholders to activate their response protocols.

The warning is a component of NIHSA’s continuous efforts to lessen the increasing effects of seasonal flooding, which still causes infrastructure damage and thousands of displaced people every year.

The most recent advice follows the Lagos State Government’s warning to residents in the Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle regions of the state to move from lowlands to highlands in order to prevent flooding.
